The Transfer Test

The current situation with the secondary education transfer process is lamentable and presents a range of problems for parents, teachers and most importantly of all, the students. Recent legal changes now allow teachers to help students prepare for these tests. Regardless, the heart of the problem lies in the fact that the tests are not fair.

Can you work it out? If not, try standing on your head.

The transfer test procedure for secondary education can be a scary and intimidating time for most 10 and 11 year olds. Helping them deal with this bewildering process is important. A well prepared child can confidently cope with not just the problem solving and knowledge required on the day of the test, but also with the emotional pressures of the exam process.

I use past papers and exercises based on the real transfer tests. The use of scrap paper and visualisation of problems is encouraged. A range of educational games are available for students designed to develop literacy and numeracy. It's good to have fun while we learn. I also introduce students to some of Raymond Smullyan's logic problems to get them thinking laterally. Material is presented in a child friendly manner with age appropriate language. All questions that children have are happily answered. We're here to learn.
